The Los Angeles School Police Department said two young people were taken into custody Thursday morning following the stabbing of a student’s parent at Crenshaw High School in South Los Angeles.
In a written statement, the Los Angeles Unified School District said the assailants showed up at the school and got into a fight with a student. District officials said the fight escalated when one of the assailants stabbed the student’s parent, prompting officials to lock down the school.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said it received a call around 9 a.m. from the Los Angeles School Police Department about a stabbing at the school located on the 5000 block of S. 11th Street in Hyde Park, said fire department spokesperson Lindsey Lantz.
Firefighters and paramedics were en route to the school when police canceled the emergency call after the victim told police they would drive themselves to a local hospital to seek treatment for their injuries. Lantz did not know the condition of the victim.
A school police source told The Times that the stabbing appeared to have occurred inside a classroom, but school police spokesman Allen Chavez said the incident occurred outside of the school. He did not know whether the assailants were students. He said police are continuing their search for a third assailant and the stabbing attack remains under investigation.
Shortly before 1 p.m., school officials said the school lockdown was lifted but out of abundance of caution, they requested police officers to remain on campus until next week.
Times staff writer Howard Blume contributed to this report.
