MIAMI / EFE — Un hombre que arrojó en 2015 a su hija de cinco años desde un puente al agua en la bahía de Tampa (Florida) y falleció fue encontrado culpable de asesinato en primer grado por un jurado, informaron medios locales.
John Jonchuk, de 29 años, fue declarado culpable de asesinato en primer grado por un jurado en un tribunal de la ciudad de Clearwater, en la costa oeste de Florida.
Horas antes de que Jonchuck arrojara a su hija Phoebe desde un puente al agua, la línea de urgencia de abuso de menores de Florida recibió una llamada del abogado del hombre en la que alertaba de que su cliente sufría de “delirios mentales”.

Sin embargo, la persona que atendió la llamada ignoró la advertencia e información al entender que la menor no estaba en peligro.
La defensa de Jonchuck, que alegó un largo historial de problemas mentales de su cliente, no rebatió la acusación de que este arrojó a la menor desde una altura de 62 pies (19 metros), recogió el diario Tampa Bay Times.
La Fiscalía argumentó durante el juicio que se trató de una acto premeditado motivado por la “ira” que sentía Jonchuck ante la posibilidad de que la madre de Phoebe alejase de él a su hija.
Pero la abogada de oficio que defendió a Jonchuck relató al jurado que fueron los “delirios” que sufría su cliente los que le hicieron creer que su hija estaba poseída y que, si la arrojaba al vacío, el arcángel Gabriel bajaría a rescatarla.
En el momento en que la tiró del puente, Jonchuck “pensó que estaba protegiendo a su hija (...) Era un locura sin ningún sentido”, explicó Jessica Manuele, su abogada.
Los hechos sucedieron el 8 de enero de 2015, cuando Jonchuck detuvo su coche en el puente Sunshine Skyway, sacó a su hija del asiento trasero y la arrojó al vacío.
El hombre fue posteriormente arrestado y acusado de asesinato en primer grado y fue sometido a una serie de evaluaciones psiquiátricas y mentales.

El abogado, que había llevado el caso de divorcio de Jonchuck, alertó ese día de los problemas mentales de su cliente en una llamada que hizo al Departamento de Niños y Familias (DCF), en la que relató cómo éste condujo su vehículo hasta tres diferentes iglesias con el pijama puesto y su hija y había pedio al letrado que tradujera la Biblia al sueco.
Además, Jonchuck manifestaba miedos paranoicos de que la niña no fuese su hija biológica, según el abogado.
Fue un agente el que vio ese día un vehículo detenerse en el puente y a un hombre que salió de este con una niña y la arrojó desde la plataforma.
