Black Thunder takes first half title

Heidi Chappell’s pitching and hitting performances were a key reason
Black Thunder was able to win the first half championship of the
12-and-Under Division at Huntington Beach Girls Softball.
Chappell pitched a complete-game victory and collected three RBI
to lead the way in a 10-3 victory over the Mambas in a one-game
playoff to determine the division’s first half winner.
Chappell allowed two earned runs on the mound and went two for
three on offense.
The Black Thunder got two hits and two RBI from Meghan White and
two hits from Amy Nunez. Lena Smith, Elise Nordin, Tanya Winger and
Brittany Rapose all singled.
Erica Congeliere and Hannah Thomas each tripled twice and went
three for three to lead the Mambas.

Black Thunder 2, Dirt Dawgs 1
Lena Smith delivered a triple to score the go-ahead run as the
Black Thunder held off the Dirt Dawgs.
Heidi Chappell and the Dirt Dawgs’ Taysia Kaufman put on a
pitchers’ duel for seven innings.
Chappell went two for two on offense and Amy Nunez and Elise
Nordin singled for the Black Thunder.
In other 12-and-Under action:
Dirt Dawgs 5, Big Blue Wrecking Crew 4
Kendall Kraiss hit a home run in the final inning to lift the Dirt
Dawgs to victory.
After the Big Blue Wrecking Crew had rallied from a 4-1 deficit to
tie the score, Kraiss hit her home run on an 0-2 count with two out.
Donna Biegel hit an RBI triple to account for the only other hit
in the game for the Dirt Dawgs.
Hits by Lana Rutkin, Sarah Hernandez and Kalie Swain led to three
runs in the top of the fifth inning as the Big Blue Wrecking Crew
rallied to tie the score at 4-4.
Rutkin went three for three with a double and RBI and Hernandez
finished with two hits.
Dirt Dawgs pitcher Taysia Koffman struck out nine.
14-and-Under Division
Killer Attitude 14, Cherry Bombers 1
Killer Attitude held a precarious, 3-2 lead heading into the
fourth inning before Katie VanOstrand homered to ignite a six-run
output against their Garden Grove opponent.
Taylor Pitts, Katherine Kent, Brenna Klein, Alexa Rowsey and
Catherine Wakeman all singled during the big inning.
Kent, Pitts, Rowsey and Klein each had two hits overall, Kara
Rutkin and Tasha Conroy each doubled and Ally Nunez singled and
scored twice.
Klein limited Garden Grove to four hits and one earned run in four
innings to get the win. Rutkin pitched the final two innings,
striking out the side in the sixth.
In club baseball action:
13-year-old Division
HB Breakers 11, SoCal Yankees 3
Bryan Kobylka, Randy Guite, Mickey Moses, James Miller and Johnny
McCarthy each accounted for two hits during a 13-hit attack by the HB
Breakers.
Kyle Buchan and Ryan Donahue shared pitching duties for the
Breakers and the duo gave up four hits.
HB Breakers 5, Mizuno Sluggers 3
The two Huntington Beach-based club teams met in a game that saw
the Breakers’ Randy Guite single, double and collect three RBI.
Bryan Kobylka and Mickey Moses both had RBI hits and Johnny
McCarthy doubled for the Breakers.
Robbie Herron and Aaron Amaral pitched the Breakers to victory.
Carl Eberts and Scott Baxter turned in solid pitching for the
Sluggers.

Region 117 Under-10 Division
Red Thunder 3, The Stingray Warriors 1
Jamie Harris posted all three goals -- including two in the first
quarter -- to lead the Red Thunder.
Raquel Clark scored in the second quarter for The Stingray
Warriors.
