Doubles teams heat up in sectionals

Doubles competition at the 101st annual Southern California Tennis

Association junior sectional championships began Tuesday and that

meant a local battle among girls 18-and-under.

Newport Coast’s Juliet Mutzke and partner Alex Jurewitz, from

Palos Verdes, defeated the Newport Beach combo of Vanessa Dunlap and

Diana Khoury 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals.

The reward for Mutzke and Jurewitz is a meeting today against

top-seeded Jessica Nguyen and Danon Beatty at 2:30 p.m.

A similar prize awaits Corona del Mar’s Robert Koury and Newport

Beach’s Charlie Farmer who defeated Julian Patino and Robert Zacks

6-1, 6-4 Tuesday. They will meet the boys No. 1-seeded team in Gary

Sacks and Brandon Wai in the second round today at the Los Caballeros

Sports Village in Fountain Valley at 2:30 p.m.

Also advancing in the boys doubles competition Tuesday were

sixth-seeded Chase Muller and Kaes Van’t Hof, who prevailed 6-3, 6-1

and will match up against Cale Planck and Jonathan Tragardh today at

2:30.

Tyler Deck of Newport Beach and partner Blake Meister also

advanced to the second round when their opponent withdrew because of

injury.

Costa Mesa’s Wes Burrows wasn’t as fortunate, dropping two sets to

the No. 2 seed in the tournament along with partner Ryan Sandburg.

Burrows is still alive though in the boys 16-and-under singles

competitionThree girls singles players were in action Tuesday, but

only Alexandria Walters of Corona del Mar could advance, defeating

Irena Katzarkov 6-4, 6-2 in the 14-and-under division.

In the 12s, Newport Beach’s Melissa Matsuoka and Balboa’s Hailey

Hogan both lost, though Hogan extended her opponent to three sets.
