Pirates victorious in final minute

Freshman Matt Fennell scored on a penalty kick in the 90th minute

Friday, lifting the Orange Coast College men’s soccer team to a 3-2

victory over Long Beach.

Long Beach tied the score, 2-2, in the 85th minute after the

Pirates had fought back from an early deficit to take a 2-1 lead.

Fennell’s game-winner slipped past Vikings goalie Luis Hernandez,

who made three saves.

Jose Serpas scored OCC’s first goal on an 18-yard shot that found

the upper-left corner to tie the score at one in the 31st minute.

UCI tops Oral Roberts

* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team opened the

UTA/La Quinta Invitational, hosted by Texas Arlington, with a

three-game sweep of Oral Roberts Friday.

Outside hitter Kelly Wing led all players with 14 kills and added

nine digs as the Anteaters prevailed, 30-21, 30-20, 30-23. Libero

Brenda Waterman chipped in with 10 digs and Amanda Vazquez added nine

kills. Setter Ashlie Hain had 37 assists and Sami Cash delivered a

career-high five aces.

The Anteaters continue tournament play with a match against

Arkansas Little Rock at 9:30 a.m. today and follow that up with a 5

p.m. contest against host Texas Arlington.

Spartans blank ‘Eaters

* SOCCER: The UC Irvine men’s soccer team was shut out, 2-0, by

San Jose State Friday in a nonconference game at Anteater Stadium.

Johnny Gonzalez scored on a penalty kick 34 minutes into the game

to give the Spartans (2-0-1) a 1-0 lead and Eric Rodriguez added a

second-half goal off an assist from Gonzalez with 27 seconds

remaining in the match.

Ryan Mathy made three saves for the Anteaters (2-1).

UCI returns to action Friday, when it plays host to Loyola

Marymount at 7 p.m.

OCC falls in opener

* WATER POLO: Orange Coast College lost its opening match of the

season, 10-5, to Chaffey in the first game of the Cypress College

women’s water polo tournament.

Mary Stashak had two saves, but the Pirates allowed eight

second-half goals after taking a 3-2 lead into halftime. Five players

scored one goal each for Orange Coast.
