Sailors turn away Saints

Newport Harbor High scored all three of its goals in the first half
and blanked Santa Ana, 3-0, Tuesday in field hockey action at Harper
School, the Sailors’ home field.
Senior Cologne Schmidt passed 25 yards upfield to classmate
Victoria Swigert, who scored Newport’s first goal with Tiffany
Vandersloot running ahead on the three-player break.
Senior Kerrie Gates took a pass by Kristen Jendrusina to score the
second goal with 10 minutes, 37 seconds left in the first half.
Nearly eight minutes later, Dana Owad scored unassisted on a corner
for the final tally.
Ashley Gleason and Rachel Zarnow highlighted Newport’s defense
while Owad anchored the midfield. Ashley Harrison and Jendrusina
provided good stick work on the front lines. Vandersloot pushed the
ball forward to lead several scoring chances.
Newport goalkeeper Amanda Wittman made one save, but turned away
four Santa Ana attacks in the first half. Newport outshot the Saints,
17-2.
The Sailors travel to face Glendora at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.
