Mesa wins on buzzer-beater

Costa Mesa High’s boys basketball team scored four points in the
final 17 seconds, including a buzzer-beating 10-foot jumper by
sophomore Tony Krikorian, to defeat Servite, 57-55, and claim third
place in the consolation bracket of the Anaheim Convention Center
tournament Saturday.
Sophomore guard Scott Knox tied the game at 55 with two of his 22
points on a layup and after a Friar threw the ball away, Mesa
regained possession with nine seconds left. Junior Jeff Waldron, who
tied his season-high of 23 points for the Mustangs (6-3), inbounded
the ball to Krikorian, who first attempted to pass before launching
the game-winner, Mesa assistant Carl Smith said. Servite fell to 6-3.
Waldron grabbed 11 rebounds while Marko Stankovic (eight points)
tallied eight to go with seven by Knox. Waldron and Knox each had
four steals.
Mesa converted 5 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Newport’s Glatch wins
title at Orange Bowl
* TENNIS: Alexa Glatch of Newport Beach won the prestigious Orange
Bowl international tennis championships in the girls 16s at Key
Biscayne, Fla., on Saturday, defeating Laura Vallverdu of Venezuela
in the final, 6-1, 6-3.
Glatch, only 14, is just the third American to win this title in
the last 20 years. Other notable Americans who have won this event
are Chris Evert (1969) and Mary Jo Fernandez (1984).
Sea Kings take second
* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys basketball team
finished second place in the Arroyo Grande invitational after
defeating San Luis Obispo, 61-57, Saturday.
CdM (5-4) trailed, 57-56, late in the fourth quarter, but Pancho
Seaborn nailed a three-pointer with 35 seconds left and Tyler Lance,
who set the screen to get Seaborn open, was fouled on the play. Adam
Freede then scored to secure the win. Seaborn, who earned
all-tournament honors, scored a game-high 22 points, including four
three-pointers, while Jay Northridge and Freede added 16 and 12
points, respectively.
The Sea Kings went 3-1 in the six-team tournament, which had a
round-robin format. Atascadero won the invitational with a 4-0
record.

‘Eaters win first game
* BASKETBALL: Kristen Green grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds and
scored 14 points to help lead the UC Irvine women’s basketball team
to its first win of the season, a 55-41 nonconference victory over
host Sacramento State Saturday.
Green recorded her first double-double of the season, while
Christina Callaway had her third with 15 points and a season-high 13
rebounds. Courtney Ferguson came off the bench to score 12 points for
the Anteaters (1-6). Sacramento State dropped to 0-10.

CdM finishes sixth
* WRESTLING: Corona del Mar High’s wrestling team finished sixth
with just six wrestlers in the Big Bear tournament, which included 20
teams, Saturday.
Taylor Alston (112-pound division), Brian Feeley (135), Jon Dean
(140) and Andrew Kelegian (215) finished third in their respective
weight classes. Ryan Shores (160) and Robbie Richey (heavyweight)
contributed fourth-place finishes.
Sailors fall to Kennedy
* BASKETBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team closed
out its action in the Anaheim Convention Center tournament with a
55-48 loss to Kennedy in the 13th-place final at the Anaheim
Convention Center Saturday.
Junior Brett Perrine scored 13 points to lead the Sailors (6-4).
Jamie Deifenbach had eight points.
Newport will play at Calabasas Tuesday at 7 p.m., then the Sailors
head to Alaska for a tournament.
