Glatch wins second

Top-seeded Alexa Glatch of Newport Beach defeated Jennifer Lee

Heinser of Miami, 6-7 (1), 6-0, 6-3, to win the girls 18s singles

title at the prestigious 38th Easter Bowl United States Tennis

Association championships Saturday at the Riviera Resort in Palm

Springs.

Glatch, 15, lost a set for only the second time in six matches

during the week against Heinser, but persevered to claim her second

singles title in three years at the event -- she won the girls 14s

crown in 2003.

Glatch, with partner Lindsay Burdette, won the girls 18s doubles

Friday and tournament officials believe it is the first time a player

has won both singles and doubles titles in the division in the same

year.

Also Saturday, Carsten Ball, the No. 2 seed and former standout at

Corona del Mar High, fell to 10th-seeded Sam Querrey, 6-3, 6-3, in

the boys 18s singles final.

In the girls 16s singles semifinal, Costa Mesa resident Nelly

Radeva upset second-seeded Kirsten Flower of Columbus, Ohio, 6-7 (5),

6-3, 6-3.

Radeva advanced to her first Easter Bowl final, where she will

face fourth-seeded McCall Jones of Coto de Caza, Calif., today.

Lions upset Chapman

* SOFTBALL: The Vanguard University softball team held visiting

Chapman, ranked second in NCAA Division III, to seven hits in two

games and won both nonconference contests Saturday.

Jen Rynda (five strikeouts) and Krystal Keltner combined on a

four-hit shutout in the Lions’ 2-0 victory in the first game.

Jenna Willis allowed two hits and no runs in five innings to earn

her fourth win of the season in a 2-1 triumph in the second game for

Vanguard (20-20).

Pirates win in 14th

* BASEBALL: Josh Banda’s sacrifice fly scored Matt Cline and

reliever Luke Beck secured the final three outs for the Orange Coast

College baseball team’s 4-3 victory in 14 innings against Orange

Empire Conference foe Saddleback Saturday.

Beck scattered four hits in 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to

improve to 1-0 this season. He went 3 for 5 with a run scored for

Coast (17-13-1, 8-5-1 in the OEC).

Anteaters take two

* WATER POLO: Nikki Frish scored the game-winning goal with 2:54

left and the UC Irvine women’s water polo team added one more score

for a 5-3 come-from-behind victory over Arizona State, the first of

two wins for the Anteaters in The Beach tournament at Long Beach

State Saturday.

UCI (13-12) then held on for a 7-6 victory over Cal Baptist in the

nightcap. Robyn Kaake led the way for the ‘Eaters with three goals

while Lauren Machanis combined for 20 saves in goal.

Chandy finishes 2nd

* TRACK AND FIELD: Sage Hill School junior Zach Chandy placed

second in the boys 400 meters at the Mt. San Antonio College relays

Saturday in Walnut, which attracted top athletes from across the

nation.

Chandy finished in 48.62 seconds, his third-fastest time in the

event.

OCC finishes second

* ROWING: The Orange Coast College men’s crew team finished second

Saturday in the 13-team Newport Regatta in Newport Harbor.

The Pirates received 18 points, trailing only UC Davis’ 22 points.

OCC won the second novice eight (six minutes, 14.9 seconds) and

the novice eight (6:04.1) while UC Davis won the junior varsity eight

(6:09.3) and varsity eight (6:00.4).

The Bucs also finished third in the varsity eight (6:07.1) and

fourth in the junior varsity eight. OCC will compete in the Western

Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships April 30 and May 1

at Lake Natoma near Sacramento.

Sailors split twin-bill

* SOFTBALL: Newport Harbor High committed only one error in two

nonleague games against host Rancho Alamitos Saturday -- a 2-2 tie in

eight innings and a 1-0 Sailor victory.

Senior Ashley Gleason struck out three in going eight innings in

the first game while freshman Jane Messersmith fanned one in a

five-hitter in the nightcap for the Sailors (12-5-2). Sasha Grumman,

who walked to lead off the second inning in the second game, scored

on an error on a ball hit by Gleason.

Brown tosses gem

* BASEBALL: Matt Voorhies slammed two home runs in two games and

host Vanguard University’s baseball team split its Golden State

Athletic Conference doubleheader against Concordia Saturday.

Clay Brown tossed a three-hit shutout in a 5-0 victory for

Vanguard (13-24, 9-14 in the GSAC) in the second game while Concordia

scored twice in the top of the 12th inning and held on to down the

Lions, 7-6, in Game 1.

Loftin places 8th

* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine’s Kirsten Loftin finished eighth in

the pole vault with a mark of 11 feet, 11 3/4 inches, at the Mt. San

Antonio relays in Walnut Saturday.

In late Friday results, Suzanne Purmort recorded UC Irvine’s top

finish at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in Claremont.

Purmort finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of

63.35 while Marie Nguyen placed seventh in the 5,000 meters in

17:49.54.
