UCI wins Big West championship

The UC Irvine women’s golf team won the Big West Conference

championship at Tijeras Creek Golf Course Tuesday beating

second-place Long Beach State, 894-914.

UCI’s Selanee’ Henderson finished second with a three-round tally

of 3-over-par 219. Idaho’s Renee Skidmore was the medalist at 2-under

214.

All five Anteaters finished in the top 10, including a

fourth-place finish by Angela Won (224), a seventh-place tie by Jane

Chin and Carling (230), and a tenth-place finish by Kim Lorenzana

(233).

Sea Kings top Trojans

* TENNIS: Senior Wesley Miller didn’t lose a game in sweeping his

three singles sets for the second consecutive day and the host Corona

del Mar High boys tennis team cruised to a 14-4 Pacific Coast League

battle of unbeatens against University Tuesday.

Fabian Mathews also swept in singles while Spencer Reitz and Matt

Chou won all three doubles sets for the second straight match for the

Sea Kings (13-1, 4-0 in league).

Pirates roll in round 1

* TENNIS: The second-seeded Orange Coast College women’s tennis

team breezed to a 5-0 victory over visiting San Diego City in the

first round of the Southern California dual team playoffs Tuesday.

Ai Takamori won, 6-0, 6-0, and teammates Jessica Rice, Emily

Paulson, Julie Haley and Rachael Sessum each lost just one game in

sweeping their singles sets for Coast, the No. 2 seed, who will face

either third-seeded Cerritos or Palomar in the semifinals of the

eight-team event Tuesday at OCC.

Beck belts winner

* BASEBALL: Luke Beck hit a game-winning home run to right to lead

off the ninth inning and give Orange Coast College an 8-7 victory

over visiting Saddleback Tuesday in an Orange Empire Conference game.

OCC’s Keith Rizor had a no-hitter spoiled in the seventh inning

when Saddleback scored six runs. Matt Cline homered to left in the

eighth inning for the Pirates (18-13-1, 9-5-1 in conference), but

Matt Spotanski led off the top of the ninth with a triple and tied

the score at 8-8 when he scored on a wild pitch.

Sailors take first

* VOLLEYBALL: In a battle for first place in the Sea View League,

the Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team hung on to defeat host

Woodbridge, 18-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-21, 15-11, Tuesday.

UCLA-bound outside hitter Brett Perrine led the Sailors with 26

kills and six service aces while junior Brett Auer registered 14

kills for Newport (10-9, 5-0 in league). Ted Slater had 57 assists

and three blocks for Newport. (10-9, 5-0 in league). The loss drops

Woodbridge to 4-1 in league.

CdM perfect in league

* VOLLEYBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team

defeated visiting University, 25-15, 27-25, 25-12, Tuesday in a Pacific Coast League match.

The Sea Kings had a balanced attack led by senior Kevin Welch’s 13

kills, 12 digs and three blocks. Tom Welch, Kevin’s twin brother,

registered eight kills, six digs and one block for CdM (19-5, 5-0 in

league).

Phil Bannan had 28 assists and five digs while Grant Almquist had

19 assists for CdM (19-5, 5-0 in league).

CdM’s offense ignites

* BASEBALL: The Corona del Mar High baseball team turned up the

offense in the Sea Kings’ 13-6 road victory over University Tuesday

in a Pacific Coast League game. It was the most runs CdM has scored

this year.

The Sea Kings (14-4, 7-1 in league) collected 18 hits with six batters having multi-hit games, including Tyler Ray, who went 4 for 5

with three RBIs on a bases-loaded triple.

Newport finishes Irvine

* SOFTBALL: Jane Messersmith scattered two hits over 6 2/3

innings in Newport Harbor High’s 5-3 win over host Irvine Tuesday in

a Sea View League softball game.

Messersmith left in the sixth inning with back aches, but Ashley

Gleason recorded four straight outs, including two strikeouts, to

secure the victory.

Julianne Bass finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored and Lauren

Talbott was 2 for 4 with two RBI for the Sailors (13-5-1, 2-1 in

league).

Whitney ekes by Sage

* TENNIS: Playing without No. 1 singles player, senior Tristan

Cordier, the Sage Hill School boys tennis team fell to visiting

Whitney, 10-8, in Academy League play Tuesday at Balboa Bay Club

Racquet Club.

Cordier, who is sick with the flu, will be back for Monday’s

rematch against Whitney (11-5, 6-0 in league). The Lightning (9-6,

5-1), ranked No. 5, received a sweeping performance from sophomore

Martin Park, who swept in the No. 1 singles slot.

Lions finish 1-1

* SOFTBALL: The Vanguard University softball team split a

doubleheader against Point Loma Nazarene Tuesday in Golden State

Athletic Conference action.

The Lions won the first game, 4-0, thanks to Jennifer Olvera’s

three-hit shutout.

Sage sweeps twinbill

* BASEBALL: The Sage Hill School baseball team garnered its first

two Academy League wins of the season in Tuesday’s doubleheader

against visiting Whitney.

The Lightning won the first game, 2-1, when Zach Milder stole

second and third and scored on an errant throw in the bottom of the

seventh inning. The game was a continuation of a contest that was

stopped in the fifth inning because of rain.

Sage Hill kept the momentum in the second game, beating Whitney,

8-0.

Koh lifts Lightning

* SOFTBALL: Rebecca Hembarsky struck out nine batters and Emma Koh

had a two-run single in the fourth inning to help the Sage Hill

School softball team defeat host Brethren Christian, 7-2, in an

Academy League game Tuesday.

Hembarsky also went 2 for 3 at the plate for the Lightning (7-5,

2-1 in league).

Sea Kings crumble

* SOFTBALL: Sophomore Michelle Tolfa tossed a complete-game

three-hitter with nine strikeouts and no earned runs while also

drilling a solo shot over the fence in the fourth inning, but the

host Corona del Mar High softball team fell to Northwood, 2-1, in

Pacific Coast League play Tuesday.

Tolfa was 1 for 3 at the plate for CdM (11-8, 2-2 in league),

tallying her sixth home run of the year.

Newport downed

* TENNIS: Woodbridge High’s No. 1 singles player Michael McClune,

ranked No. 20 in United States Tennis Association boys 16s, swept his

sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and the visiting Newport Harbor boys tennis team

lost, 13-5, in Sea View League play Tuesday.

Sophomore Jake Fleming won two sets for the Sailors (3-7, 2-4 in

league), who are tied for third with Aliso Niguel. Sage Hill is swept

* VOLLEYBALL: The host Sage Hill School boys volleyball team fell

victim to Capistrano Valley Christian, 25-21, 25-19, 25-19, in an Academy League match Tuesday.

Matt Knutson posted a match-high 19 kills to lead CVC (7-5, 3-2 in

league) while junior Jake Lazere led Sage (1-10, 1-4) with eight

kills.
