The Silver & Black Attack, a local under-8 division Select girls’ soccer team out of AYSO Region 56, saw playing action as a team for the first time this season last weekend and came away with a third-place finish at the Long Beach Mayor’s Cup tournament.
The team went 2-0-1 at Hartwell Park.
In their tournament opener Saturday, the Silver & Black Attack took a 1-0 lead on the Long Beach Yellowjackets but eventually settled for a 1-1 tie.
The Silver & Black Attack dominated the first half of play and assaulted the Yellowjackets’ goal with 16 shot attempts. The only one that found the mark, however, was a shot by Lindsay Heckman who planted the ball into the back of the net to give the locals a 1-0 lead.
The Yellowjackets scored the tying goal off a counterattack.
The Silver & Black had an easy time of it in their second outing Saturday and recorded a 5-1 victory over the Pink Pirates. Mikayla Edwards recorded a hat trick and combined with Casey Sommer was strong in goal to lead the win.
Edwards’ first goal came after she penetrated the Pink Pirates’ defense, a score which lifted the Silver & Black Attack to a 1-0 lead at the half. In the opening minutes of the second half, she converted a penalty kick for a 2-0 lead. Lindsay Heckman followed with a goal for a 3-0 lead before Edwards finished a cross sent in by Michael Guptill to earn the hat trick.
Guptill scored the final goal for the Silver & Black Attack.
In the third-place game played Sunday, the Silver & Black Attack again took on the Pink Pirates and this time came away with a 2-1 victory. Early shots on goal by Jessica Ruggiero, Gretchen Kirkreit and Nicole Jacobs forced the Pink Pirates into an on-goal error, giving the Silver & Black Attack a 1-0 lead. Later in the first half, Chloe Genova slipped past the Pink Pirates defense and set up a goal by Edwards.
