California Classic

FRESNO — Corona del Mar High earned two victories to open the season in the tournament that includes 96 teams over three divisions at Buchanan High.

The Sea Kings, the tournament’s No. 2 seed in Division I, beat Redwood of Visalia, 6-1, in the first round, then won, 7-0, over St. Mary’s of Stockton.

Melissa Matsuoka, CdM’s No. 1 singles player, did not make the trip. She is out for the next two weeks with a srained right wrist, Coach Brian Ricker said.

Corona del Mar advanced to today’s 8:30 a.m. semifinals against St. Francis of Mountain View.

Paige Polizois won in singles in both matches. Danielle Kaiden and Lindsay Zotovich also picked up singles wins in the first round. The tournament features four singles matches and three in doubles, with each being the best-of-three sets.

Katelyn Nguyen, playing No. 1 singles, won in the second round to help with the shutout.

The Sea Kings also entered their junior varsity team in Division II, playing against varsity teams. CdM’s JV beat Bakersfield Chrisitan, 7-6 on games, after a 3-3 tie, and took down Alameda, 4-2.

CdM also had another junior varsity team competing in the Sage Hill Lightning Invitational at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club, where the Sea Kings were also playing against varsity teams. CdM beat South Torrance, 13-5.

“It was a good day for CdM,” Ricker said.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Corona del Mar def. Huntington Beach

CORONA DEL MAR — Conley Kipp had 18 kills and five service aces to help the Sea King earn their first win of the season, a 25-15, 23-25, 29-27, 25-12 nonleague victory over visiting Huntington Beach Thursday.

Amanda Nickel added 11 kills, while Hailey Senske had 10 for CdM (1-1). Madie Smith amassed 43 assists and Catherine Sullivan recorded 25 digs for the Sea Kings, who were swept in their season opener by Long Beach Poly Thursday.

Estancia 6, Saddleback 5

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Charlie Umanski recorded a career-best four goals in the Eagles’ season opener Friday.

Estancia sophomore Conner Graham made 10 saves, a handful from close range.
