MAILBAG: Enjoying new Susi Q, but hold the whale
- Share via
I just made a cell-phone call from a nice, little lounge in the central hallway in the new Community and Susi Q Senior Center. From the comfortable couch, I could see Studio One, some ladies dancing in Studio Two and an art class in the southwest corner room where one whole wall rolls up to the out-of-doors and patio.
These are magnificent rooms and could even be used for performances and makeup the major rooms along with a close to the patio community room in the community center which is in the south part of the 20,000 square foot building.
The Susi Q Senior Center in the north end of the building is great, too.
A library with casual furniture and a fireplace in the center looks out on a spacious patio with a nice rectangle of green grass.
Three other rooms include a game room, with a interesting fountain outside, the Laguna Room where current events and bingo will be held, a tech room with 22 computers and the Great Hall where the Lunch Bunch (senior lunch for those 60 and older) is at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.
Seventy-two parking spaces down stairs provide the parking we have needed so bad and an elevator takes you up the central hallway.
The building is a great addition to our city, but please don’t put the $190,000 whale on the lawn in the patio. This outside area could be used for special events, and I think the whale might be in the way, but then that’s the business of the Arts Commission and City Council “” isn’t it?

Ministers support homeless group
We are heartened by last Tuesday night’s City Council meeting. We thank Mayor [Kelly] Boyd and the City Council for appointing the committee and for making an unequivocal commitment that its charge will be implementation of the Homeless Task Force recommendations. We will work to support its efforts to do so.
