UC Irvine def. Stanford

IRVINE — Senior All-American opposite Jon Steller had 11 kills to lead the No. 3-ranked Anteaters to a 30-25, 30-23, 30-22 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation home win Friday at the Bren Events Center.

Senior outside hitter Taylor Wilson and sophomore middle blocker Kevin Wynne added 10 kills apiece for the winners (9-2, 5-1 in conference), who have won five straight.

Senior Ryan Ammerman had 42 assists and junior middle blocker Bryan Simmons had nine block assists to help UCI post an 11-7 advantage in team blocks.

Senior libero Brent Asuka led the ’Eaters with 12 digs.

Stanford fell to 7-5, 3-4.

Santa Monica

SANTA MONICA — Sophomore Jake Melone had 12 kills to lead the Pirates to a 30-28, 30-23, 30-25 nonconference win Friday night.

Freshman Mike Stewart contributed 11 kills, three aces and three blocks, while freshman Nick Kearney had 10 kills and seven digs for OCC (1-2).

Freshman setter Paul Leon finished with 35 assists and two blocks for the Pirates.

Saddleback 47

MISSION VIEJO — Sophomore Simone Ibbotson scored 21 points and the Pirates shot 60% from the field in the second half of the Orange Empire Conference road game Friday night.

Sophomore Casey Gomez and freshman Jenna Lujan chipped in 10 points apiece for the winners (19-8, 6-2 in conference), ranked No. 16 in the state and No. 12 in Southern California. Gomez had a game-high 10 rebounds and also had seven assists, four blocked shots and four steals.

Ibbotson made eight of 15 field-goal attempts, including two of the Pirates’ three three-pointers.

Saddleback (9-14, 2-6) missed all five of its three-point attempts.

MISSION VIEJO — OCC rallied from down 11 points with inside three minutes to play, but had its last-second three-point attempt for the win blocked in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday night at Saddleback.

Nico Saldivar had a steal and layup to pull OCC within 77-75 with 25 seconds left.

After a Saddleback basket, Chris Curtis hit a three-pointer for OCC (9-18, 2-6 in conference) to cut the gap to one.

Saddleback’s Franklin Session missed two free throws with 4.9 second left, but blocked a three-point try by Eric Williams to preserve the win for the Gauchos (22-6, 7-1), ranked No. 9 in the state and No. 5 in Southern California.

Williams and Curtis had 18 points apiece for OCC, which received 17 points from Martin Whitmore.

Session had 22 points for Saddleback.

Conference Relays

COSTA MESA — The Orange Coast men’s 4x200-meter relay team, anchored by Trevor Carroll, won in 1 minute, 32.71 seconds Friday at OCC.

Stephan Ruby won the javelin throw with a mark of 50.35 meters for the Pirates. Teammate Brian Norton was second (49.58 meters).

OCC was second in the 4x1,600 relay and the 4x100 shuttle hurdles races.
