COSTA MESA — Freshman pitcher Ryan Doran struck out seven and allowed one run on three hits in seven innings as the defending state champion Pirates won their season opener Thursday.
Doran won his college debut after throwing 73 pitches. OCC gave him plenty of run support.
Mykal Stokes and Scott Stidham each singled in runs in the first inning, putting the Pirates ahead, 2-0. Stidham, who went two for four, also doubled.
Brooklyn Foster went two for four with one RBI.
OCC resumes its three-game series with Cuesta today at 10 a.m.

BYU def. UC Irvine
IRVINE — Sophomore opposite Carson Clark recorded 29 kills Thursday, but it wasn’t enough for the No. 11-ranked Anteaters to beat No. 3 BYU as the Cougars won, 30-28, 19-30, 23-30, 30-27, 17-15, handing UC Irvine its sixth straight Mountain Pacific Sports Federation loss.
The Anteaters (5-7, 1-6 in MPSF) are one MPSF loss away from matching their seven-game skid set in 2005.
Jordan DuFault contributed 16 kills, 10 digs and three services aces for UCI.
Cory Yoder added 14 kills.
The Anteaters play host to BYU (7-3 in MPSF) tonight at 7 p.m.

SAN MARCOS — Sophomore outside hitter Brad Hemmerling finished with 21 kills, helping the Pirates to a 30-23, 34-36, 30-28, 32-30 Orange Empire Conference win in the season opener Thursday.
Freshman Jeff Patton contributed 12 kills on 14 swings, six blocks and two service aces.
Paul Leon had 58 assists for OCC, which is at El Camino Wednesday.

COSTA MESA — Freshman Kari Bergeson went a combined three for six and scored twice in a nonconference doubleheader Thursday, as the Lions won their first two games of the season.
Katharine Jablonski struck out eight batters and gave up two runs in the second game. She improved to 1-1.
In Game 1, Angela St. Croix drove in two runs with two outs in the fifth inning, giving Vanguard a 3-0 lead.

COSTA MESA — Jesse Chen won in No. 4 singles and helped the No. 2 doubles team to victory Thursday as the Pirates improved to 2-0 on the season.
Brad Fisher, an Estanica High product, and Kevin Tran also picked up singles wins in the nonconference match.
WOMEN’S TENNIS

NORWALK — Kim Ho prevailed in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles play for the Pirates in a nonconference match Thursday.
Melissa Boyer, who teamed up with Ho in doubles, also won in No. 2 singles play for OCC (2-0).
